Call for paper – Urban history of the Northern countries since the Middle Ages
The Institute of Urban History at Stockholm University invites PhD students to a workshop about the urban history of the Northern countries since the Middle Ages. That refers to Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland.
The workshop will take place on April 10–11, 2025, at Stockholm University.
If you are interested in participating, please submit an abstract, no longer than 2500 characters, describing the main features of your ongoing doctoral research. Notification of acceptance will be sent by January 31, 2025, at the latest.
The aim
The aim of the workshop is to give postgraduate students, currently researching some aspect of the urban history of the North, the opportunity to present and discuss their ongoing research. The workshop concerns all aspects of the urban history of the North preferably in a comparative and trans-disciplinary perspective. We are looking for participants from a variety of disciplines, such as all fields of history, ethnology, archaeology, cultural geography, environmental studies, sociology, political science, architecture, art history, etc.
Practical information
The Institute will cover expenses for all participants, including travel and accommodation, if these costs cannot be accommodated by your home university.
- A detailed program with your abstracts will be sent out before the conference. The number of participants is limited to about 25.
- The deadline for abstract submission is January 15, 2025.
Listeners are welcome in case of empty seats!

Attach an abstract describing the main features of your ongoing doctoral research. Your abstract will be submitted to Heiko Droste, Head of the Institute of Urban History.
